Žilina’s civic amenities have been expanded with the addition of the modern OC Klokan shopping center, which emphasizes efficient operational solutions and sustainability. The general contractor for the construction was HSF System SK, part of the international construction group HSF System. The waste management facility was created using pioneering and patented 3D concrete printing technology. The investor for the OC Klokan project was MC Štadión.

The OC Klokan shopping center, located in the vicinity of the city’s sports center and just a few minutes from the train station, consists of two separate buildings. The shopping center offers more than 11,000 m² of leasable space, 17 retail units, and 216 parking spaces. “It was a great honor for us to be entrusted with the construction of a modern and sustainable shopping center right in Žilina, thus contributing to the city’s residents having more options for shopping and spending their time,” says Tomáš Kosa, director of the HSF System construction group.

Both buildings of the shopping center are designed as modern retail units with glass facades, separate entrances, and logistically separate supplies from the rear. The quality of the indoor environment is ensured by recuperation units, fans, and air conditioning systems. The construction also included a complete overhaul of the engineering networks, new water and sewer connections, electrical installations, a transformer station, and retention elements for rainwater management.

The waste management facility was printed using patented 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) technology, which enables the fast and efficient implementation of even the most demanding shape projects in conjunction with the digitization of architecture. “The mobile concrete printer and universal recipe allow concrete elements to be produced almost anywhere in the world. This unique technology also promotes sustainability by minimizing waste, optimizing shapes, and reducing energy consumption,” adds Tomáš Kosa.

A set of sustainable solutions, including extensive green roofs, was applied during construction. The facades are made of sandwich panels in a neutral gray shade with distinctive accents. The complex also features carefully planned greenery, which serves a microclimatic, insulating, and aesthetic function. The selection of plants reflects climate change and the requirements of the contemporary urban environment.

The delivery includes infrastructure for photovoltaics and chargers for electric cars. “Thanks to its proximity to sports facilities such as a football and hockey stadium, this shopping center will also serve as a hub for sports fans. From the perspective of the KLM Group, this is currently the largest project we have implemented and, in a way, our ‘flagship’ in the Žilina region,” says Michal Kozáček, General Manager of KLM Real Estate.

The shopping center is connected to two main roads, Uhoľná and Ľavobrežná, and the entrances are equipped with electric ramps with camera recognition of vehicle registration numbers. The paved areas are designed as cement-concrete slabs with high load-bearing capacity and resistance to the weight of supply equipment.

The international construction group HSF System, part of the PURPOSIA Group investment holding, which also includes HSF System SK, has already built five Klokan shopping centers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. It has always acted as the general contractor for these projects.
